Stromness' main harbour and quays are located at the northern end of town centre, and benefit from access via a new road along the shore that keeps traffic out of the north end of the town. The Tourist Information Centre is located at the new ferry terminal and passengers will find a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, with ATMs, on Victoria St.

The long-established car ferry route to Orkney from Scrabster near Thurso to Stromness is operated by Northlink Ferries. There are three sailings weekdays (04:15, 09:00 and 17:00), and two sailings on weekends (09:00 and 17:00). NorthLink Ferries' new state-of-the-art ships have been designed and built to the highest standards in terms of both safety and comfort, offering spacious lounge areas, bars, children's play areas and comfortable en-suite cabins.

Ferries can accommodate passengers with disabilities, though its advisable to inform the ferry company of any special needs when making their reservation.

Ongoing development at Scrabster harbour has permitted the regular introduction of larger and more capable ships, ensuring reliable service for the islands and a steady increase in traffic on the Scrabster - Stromness link to its current level of 100,000 passengers and 45,000 vehicles each year. Facilities at the port itself are limited, however Northlink ferries provide excellent onboard facilities.
