One of the principal Dodecanese islands (easternmost of the Greek islands) is Rhodes. The most frequented of the 12 islands, Rhodes draws in travellers with its gorgeous landscape and enthralling history. The island was once home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Colossus of Rhodes. This large statue once straddled the harbour but was shattered by an earthquake in 237 BC. The ferry port of Rhodes is located at the northeastern end of the old town.
