Poole Harbour ranks as one of the world's largest natural harbours and its busy commercial port serves both cross channel ferries and cargo vessels. Sharing the navigation channels with cross-channel ferries are yachtsmen and the local fishing fleet. The Terminal provides a summer cafe for meals and refreshments, as well as a bureau de change, and a left luggage locker facility.

Cross-channel crossings are provided by Brittany Ferries, which makes two daily sailings to Cherbourg in France (crossings take 4 hours, 15 minutes). There is also a fast ferry (Fastcraft) available which makes the crossing in just over 2 hours.
