Lerwick is a large and busy working port, and the terminus for the NorthLink ferries to Kirkwall and Aberdeen. Shetland's capital and only town is Lerwick. This lies roughly at the centre of Shetland's main island, Mainland. The old fishing port has been vastly expanded, but retains much of its charm.

Tórshavn is more than a port, it is arguably the smallest capital city in the world. Tórshavn offers first class shopping facilities, which are tax-free for tourists, while the nearest tourist information office is located 400 metres from the port. A bank is available within a five-minute walk of the port, while public telephones are available in the terminal, 400 metres from the ship. A selection of shops is found in the town centre, five minutes walk away, with several hotels, restaurants and snack bars within walking distance.
