Guernsey is the second-largest of the Channel Islands, which are officially British, although they retain their own sovereignty in many respects. The islands lie between Britain and France but are actually geographically closer to France. Guernsey's St Peter Port combines the most sheltered anchorage in the Channel Islands with deep water and massive spring tides. There are five ferry routes to and from Guernsey, including services to Weymouth, Portsmouth, Poole, St Malo, and Jersey, all operated by Condor Ferries.

Portsmouth is the historical home of the Royal Navy. Located centrally on the South Coast of England, it has excellent links to the motorway network, and offers both passenger and freight services to a number of continental destination ports. It is also easily accessible by rail, with rail services generally timed to connect with the ferry departures.
