Genoa's port ranks as one of the busiest in Europe and is the hub of Italy's shipbuilding industry. The city has throughout history been an important sea power due to the location of its harbour and its active merchant community. Bombing in WWII destroyed much of the port. The city has since reconstructed and modernised its harbour facilities.

Two companies offer crossings between Genoa and Tunis: Grandi Navi Veloci and SNCM Ferries. Grandi Navi Veloci, the youngest cruise line in the Grimaldi group, was founded in 1992. The company introduced a new line of ships in the Mediterranean which can offer fast passenger, car and merchandise transport while at the same time combining the convenience and opulence of a cruise ship.

SNCM (Société Nationale Maritime Corse Méditerranée) Ferries has provided the public maritime service to and from Corsica since 1976, and also inherited a very long-running service on the Algeria and Tunisia routes. SNCM provides the best capacity for transportation of passengers, vehicles and freight. The company has more than 3,500 crossings a year, with a full range of services provided on its fleet of different ships.

Tunis is the capital of Tunisia as well as the country's most important industrial centre. The port of Tunis is on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. It is divided into two separate parts. Here, 19th century French boulevards and modern western-style shops clash sharply against exotic Arabian mazes of streets with 13th century Moorish houses and souks. Nearby are the ruins of Carthage, the Phoenician city rebuilt by Julius Caesar and Augustus.
