The seaport town of Brindisi is of chief importance due to its position as a starting-point for the Eastern Mediterranean. The inner harbour depth allows ocean steamers to lie at the quays. Frederick II constructed an impressive castle with huge round towers to guard the inner harbour; today it serves as a prison. The cathedral, dating from 1178, was destroyed by earthquakes and restored in 1743 to 1749.
