The inner harbour depth of Brindisi allows ocean steamers to lie at the quays. This seaport town is important due to its position as a beginning-point for the East Mediterranean. Frederick II had an impressive castle with huge round towers built here to guard the inner harbour. The castle today functions as a prison. The cathedral, dating from 1178, was destroyed by earthquakes and subsequently restored from 1743 to 1749.

Cefalonia (Kephalonia) is the largest island in the Ionian chain and offers a lot of diversity. The castle at Assos is a must-see for the views from its towers. Argostoli, the capital of the island, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, and little remains. Lixouri, the island?s second largest town, has a serene atmosphere, as well as a lovely 19th century mansion/museum.
