Book Leverburgh to Berneray Ferry tickets here!

Berneray and the nearby uninhabited island of Pabbay are in the Sound of Harris in Scotland. Although many of the islands in the Sound of Harris were once populated, Berneray is now the only one. This stunning island is home to a small, friendly community of fishermen. There is a smattering of cottages along the east coast of the island, with a concentration around Bays Loch, also home to the island's harbour. Farther north the road leads to the beautiful sandy beach near Beasdaire.

Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) makes the crossing from Berneray to Leverburgh and back four times a day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and three times a day on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The company has over 150 years of experience serving the islands and ports on the western coast of Scotland, the Firth of Clyde and the Western Isles. CalMac is the leading ferry operator in Scotland and on average transports almost 5 million passengers and one million cars in the region annually. The company provides transportation services to remote communities and thus continually expands its services in this area.

Leverburgh was formerly known as Obbe and was renamed in 1923 in honour of Cheshire soap manufacturer Lord Leverhulme. He invested in the building of piers, kippering sheds, houses and new roads here. Leverhulme?s original plans were to turn Leverburgh into a large fishing port, however, he died before achieving his goal. Today, houses on the left of the street leading to the pier remain from the days when they were built for his managers. Leverburgh has a post office and some shops.
