Ferry companies operating from the Port of Kirkwall
NorthLink Ferries operates from the pier at Hatston and connects Kirkwall with Lerwick in the Shetlands and Aberdeen in northern Scotland. The route departs Lerwick Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 17:30, calls at Kirkwall and sails on to Aberdeen - the sailings on the other days do not stop at Kirkwall. The Kirkwall call is also skipped during the winter months. The journey time for this crossing is roughly 12 hours.

Orkney Ferries services both the North and South Islea. The Kirkwall-Stronsay-Sanday-Eday route is serviced once daily with altering routes and a crossing time of 3 hours from Kirkwall to Eday; the Kirkwall-Westray route is serviced almost twice daily, except Sunday, with a crossing time of 1 hour and 25 minutes. The service on the Kirkwall-Papa Westray is limited to two sailings a week on Tuesday and Friday (an extension of the Kirkwall-Westray service), with a journey time of 2½ hours from Kirkwall and 40 minutes from Westray. The Kirkwall-Shapinsay sailings depart five to six times a week Monday through Saturday, with only two sailings on Sunday. The crossing takes 45 minutes. The Kirkwall-North Ronaldsay route is serviced once a week on Friday mornings, with a journey time of 2½ hours.
